A nurse arrested for attempting to kill her 15-year-old daughter has received letters from the girl offering forgiveness if the act was due to psychiatric problems, a relative said Monday.

The nurse was arrested July 16 on suspicion of repeatedly giving the girl tea and food laced with an asthma drug in an attempt to kill her to claim 30 million yen in insurance money. If taken in excess, the drug can cause an irregular heartbeat and the accumulation of fluid in the lungs.

The name of the nurse has been withheld because she has been undergoing a two-month psychiatric examination since July 29.

The girl, a first-year student at a Nara high school, has been sending her mother one or two letters every week via her mother's lawyer, the girl's aunt told Kyodo News.
