Typhoon Ewiniar began dumping rain Saturday afternoon on the quake-hit Izu island chain in the Pacific Ocean south of Tokyo, the Meteorological Agency said.

The agency called on islanders to be alert for possible rain-induced mudflows as recent quakes that have hit islands throughout the chain may have loosened ground. Mudflows from volcanic ash are feared on Miyake Island following recent eruptions there, according to the agency.

Miyake, some 180 km south of Tokyo, had received 24 mm of rain by 4 p.m. Saturday. Up to 100 mm of rain was expected for the Izu chain and parts of eastern Japan by this evening and more is likely afterward, the agency said.
