A 24-year-old man in Nagoya was seriously wounded Friday night after an apparent attempt to blow up a vending machine and steal cash from it ended in a premature explosion, police officials said Saturday.

Kei Suzumechi had some of the fingers on his right hand blown off and his right eyeball destroyed when an explosion occurred around 10:40 p.m. Friday near the bottom part of a soft drink vending machine in the city's Minato Ward, according to officials.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for Suzumechi, the operator of a local company related to video game software, and Ryuji Ito, 23, a computer programmer with his firm, on suspicion that they tried to blow up the vending machine to steal the cash inside. Ito was reportedly waiting in Suzumechi's vehicle parked nearby when the explosion took place.

The warrant on Ito was served Saturday afternoon and police intend to question Suzumechi once his condition improves.
