OSAKA -- Japanese travelers to the United States appear to have become targeted by U.S. immigration officials at an Oregon airport amid a crackdown on illegal immigrants from Asia, according to recent press reports from Oregon.
The number of entry denials to foreign visitors at Portland International Airport has risen noticeably since 1998, the reports say.
Last year, about 450 people, mostly Japanese, were denied entry to the U.S. at Portland airport, or an average of 2.78 people per 1,000 travelers. The figure is over 10 times the 0.25 average recorded at San Francisco airport.
