The annual exodus of travelers heading for hometowns or tourist resorts at home and abroad for the Bon midsummer holidays began Friday with vacationers jamming airports and railway stations throughout the morning.

According to airlines and Japan Railway companies, the rush will peak today, with JR officials warning that most reserved seats on bullet trains are sold out.

In the morning, occupancy for nonreserved seats on bullet trains bound for Akita and Morioka in northeastern Japan exceeded 100 percent. On bullet trains bound for Kyushu, many nonreserved seats were fully occupied.
