In a move to facilitate competition in the power industry, a yearlong contract with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry was awarded Thursday to Diamond Power Corp. -- an affiliate of Mitsubishi Corp. -- to supply electricity to MITI's main building and its annex in Tokyo's Kasumigaseki district.
The move follows liberalization of large-scale electricity retailing on March 21 in accordance with the revised Electricity Enterprise Act.
The revised law forces Japan's 10 electric power monopolies to compete with each other as well as new power suppliers in providing electricity to large-lot users capable of receiving electricity of more than 2,000 kw at a time.
