Daihatsu Motor Co. is negotiating with Malaysia's national car manufacturer Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn. Bhd. (Perodua) to raise its stake in the firm above 20 percent, the New Straits Times reported Wednesday.

"Shareholders had been discussing the equity matter seriously over the past one month," Zainuddin Bahaudin, Perodua's marketing and sales director, was quoted as saying.

Daihatsu and its local subsidiary, Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., hold a combined 25 percent share in Perodua.

The report did not specify the stake Daihatsu is negotiating but indicated it would be "in similar fashion to Honda."
