A food manufacturer in Shimizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, said Thursday it has begun recalling some 26,000 cans of baby corn after a dead lizard was found in one.

Shimizu Shokuhin Kaisha Ltd. said it had received a complaint from a housewife in Suzuka, Mie Prefecture, who found the 4-cm-long body of a lizard in a can of corn in early July.

Officials of the food company said it is likely the lizard entered the can on April 12, 1999, when a conveyer belt at a factory in Thailand stopped for a long time with the cans uncovered.

The firm did not act swiftly or come to examine the lizard after receiving the complaint, the woman said.
