If Texas Gov. George W. Bush becomes president, his administration would reinforce its security alliance with Japan while placing less emphasis on its ties with China, according to the 2000 platform of the Republican Party issued Monday.

A Republican administration under Bush would also seek an economically "viable and open" Japan to help make the rest of Asia prosper in the new century.

The platform described the Japan-U.S. security alliance as an "important foundation of peace, stability, security, and prosperity in Asia."

"Republican priorities in the next administration will be clear. We will strengthen our alliance with Japan," the platform said.
