The season's sixth typhoon, Bolaven, is likely to come close to Kyushu today, bringing heavy rain to Kyushu and to Shikoku, the Meteorological Agency said Saturday.

The typhoon, whose name means highland in Laotian, could bring up to 250 mm of rain to Shikoku, as much as 200 mm to the Amami islands and southern Kyushu, and up to 150 mm to northern Kyushu by noon Sunday.

Thunderstorms are expected to deposit 50 mm of rain per hour on some regions.

The typhoon is expected to be over the East China Sea about 220 km west-southwest of Makurazaki, Kagoshima Prefecture, by 9 a.m. today.
