An earthquake measuring a preliminary magnitude of 5 hit the Izu Islands chain south of Tokyo on Sunday, the Meteorological Agency said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The 12:15 p.m. temblor registered a lower 5 on the 7-point Japanese intensity scale on Shikine Island and 4 on Niijima and Kozu islands, according to the agency.
Its focus was in the shallow seabed off Niijima and Kozu, it added. The moderate but shallow quake followed a magnitude 4.4 temblor that hit the Izu chain at 12:24 a.m., the agency said. The early morning quake registered 4 on the Japanese scale on Shikine and 3 on Kozu.
