Japan and the United States officially announced Wednesday an agreement that would reduce local connection fees charged by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. by over 20 percent in two years.
Under the agreement, which was reached after negotiations in Tokyo, 22.5 percent will be shaved off the connection fees over three years. The Japanese side will accelerate the reductions and achieve 90 percent of the total in the first two years, retroactive from April this year.
Japan also pledged to consider tighter regulations on NTT DoCoMo Inc., the dominant Japanese cellular phone service provider, with Japan to determine by March 2001 if interconnection with the cellular phone operator should be regulated more strictly.
