Police staged a motorcade escort drill early Sunday in preparation for this week's summit of the Group of Eight major powers in Okinawa Prefecture.

More than 1,400 police officers took part in the VIP drill, which began shortly after 6 a.m. with police cars and motorcycles escorting mock limousines leaving hotels for Shuri Castle.

The drill was held at hotels in Nago, the venue for the summit, and in neighboring Onna and Yomitan, where the G8 delegations will be staying, to practice their routes to Shuri Castle in Naha, where the G8 leaders' reception will be held.

Meanwhile, police said the final group of officers dispatched from prefectural police headquarters around the country will arrive in Okinawa Sunday evening, bringing the total number of officers participating in the ad hoc security squad to some 20,000.
