Restoration work on Niijima Island began Sunday, a day after a powerful earthquake rocked the Izu Island chain and injured 10 people.

Saturday's earthquake, which measured lower 6 on the Japanese intensity scale of 7, triggered landslides in some parts of Niijima, damaging roads and waterworks and power lines.

Ten people were injured in the temblor, and two who were severely injured were airlifted to a hospital in Tokyo by a Tokyo Fire Department helicopter, Niijima village officials said.
