The World Economic Forum said Friday it has prepared policy recommendations at the request of Tokyo on how to bridge the world's "digital divide," a major topic of discussion at next weekend's Group of Eight summit in Okinawa.

The document, "From the Global Digital Divide to the Global Digital Opportunity," will be presented Wednesday in Tokyo to Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, the Geneva-based think tank said.

The study urges the G8 leaders to rise beyond narrow national interests in tackling the growing gap in information technology between rich and poor countries.

The report recommends that G8 leaders set up an international panel including private sector specialists to address the issue, adding that market principle should apply to the development of telecommunications in developing countries.
