Fujitsu Ltd., a major Japanese computer maker, and Lucent Technologies Inc. of the United States said Tuesday that they have reached a basic agreement to jointly develop a new communications infrastructure in Asia.
The planned infrastructure will be based on Lucent's "switching" technology, which processes signals distributed in different formats via the Internet.
Fujitsu will promote the technology through its telecommunications operations in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
The two firms will offer use of the infrastructure to telecom companies which are seeking to break into the Internet service-provider market.
