The Fuji Municipal Assembly in Shizuoka Prefecture adopted a request Monday in an extraordinary session asking the Cultural Affairs Agency to dissolve the foot-reading cult Honohana Sanpogyo.

The Fuji-based cult has been in conflict with prefectural residents over the expansion of the group's facilities.

The assembly's request says law violations by the cult necessitate action by the Cultural Affairs Agency, which has the authority to order the dissolution of a religious body believed to be harmful to public welfare.

Sadahiko Matsumoto, chairman of the Fuji Municipal Assembly, and Mayor Kiyomi Suzuki will submit the request Friday to Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori as well as Education Minister Hirofumi Nakasone and Cultural Affairs Agency chief Hideki Hayashida.

Members of the cult previously agreed with residents not to expand the facilities.

However, after police arrested cult founder and former leader Hogen Fukunaga, 55, and 11 of the cult's senior members on suspicion of fraud May 9, the assembly determined that it will not be able to coexist with the group.

Honohana is suspected of defrauding thousands of followers by predicting nonexistent illnesses through "readings" of the soles of their feet.
