A law banning abusive parents from meeting or corresponding with their children was enacted by the Diet on Wednesday.
The legislation, which would let the government challenge parents' custody rights, was approved by the Upper House in the day's session. It has already cleared the Lower House.
Sponsored by a suprapartisan group of lawmakers, the law was proposed as the number of child abuse cases is on the rise.
