Japanese pop singer Namie Amuro, who hails from Okinawa, held a concert Sunday in Honolulu to commemorate the centenary of the start of emigration from Okinawa to Hawaii.

Amuro, 22, sang a number of songs, including her hit "Can You Celebrate?" at the outdoor stadium Waikiki Shell, which was packed with an audience of 6,000.

Amuro, who debuted as a singer in 1992 and became a smash hit in 1996, blazed a trail for Okinawa natives in the music world. The pop group SPEED followed up on her success before disbanding in March.

An estimated 40,000 descendants of Okinawa natives live in Hawaii. The first group of emigrants from Okinawa arrived on Oahu in January 1900.
