A 17-year-old boy in custody in connection with the May 3-4 hijacking of a bus was served warrants Monday accusing him of murder and attempted murder, police said.

The teen, from Saga Prefecture, whose name is being withheld under the Juvenile Law, is suspected of fatally stabbing Tatsuko Tsukamoto, 68, and wounding two other passengers during the 15-hour hijacking ordeal.

Early on the morning of May 4, riot police stormed the intercity bus at a highway rest area in Higashi-Hiroshima, capturing the youth and freeing the driver and remaining passengers.

They arrested the boy, who commandeered the vehicle the previous day in Fukuoka Prefecture with a large kitchen knife. The bus traveled for more than 300 km eastward until police stormed the bus.
