A Nepalese man detained by order of the Tokyo High Court -- despite being acquitted last month of a 1997 murder -- is being held in order to facilitate appeal hearings, the court said Friday.

The hearing on the high court's decision was requested by Govinda Prasad Mainali's defense team. They asked the high court to explain Monday's detention decision.

Mainali, 33, was acquitted of murder by the Tokyo District Court last month and released, but was immediately taken to immigration authorities for overstaying his visa. He was then detained by the Tokyo Immigration Office pending deportation.
