The Diet enacted a package of legislation Friday to protect for the first time the rights of people victimized by crime in Japan.
The House of Councilors passed the three bills, which cleared the Lower House on April 21, following their submission to the Diet by the government on March 17.
The bills are chiefly designed to guarantee victims the right to testify in court about their ordeals and to read and copy trial records. The changes will come into effect within six months from Friday.
