Vice Foreign Minister of Cyprus Andreas Pirishis said Thursday that although bilateral ties are progressing at "a very satisfactory pace," greater involvement by Japan in ongoing negotiations over territorial rights in the Mediterranean nation could make those relations even more fruitful.

During a meeting with government officials here, Pirishis expressed a wish that Japan's "excellent" relations with all countries concerned with the disputed region would help solve "one of the last remaining international problems," he said.

"Japan is becoming increasingly important in the international field. I hope it will show more interest in negotiations over Cyprus," Pirishis said during a visit to The Japan Times.
