The government plans to unveil a plan to double the number of foreign students in Japan from the current 56,000 by 2010 during the upcoming meeting of Group of Eight education ministers in Tokyo and Okinawa, the Education Ministry said.
In the three-day gathering beginning Saturday, education ministers from the world's major industrialized countries and Russia are expected to call for double the number of international exchange students, teachers, researchers and administrators in the next decade.
The Japanese government will focus on increasing the number of foreign students studying here, ministry officials said.
