Japan and South Korea agreed Monday to launch a joint educational program in fiscal 2000, under which up to 1,000 South Koreans will study at Japanese state-run universities every year by fiscal 2010.

A joint statement issued by Education Minister Hirofumi Nakasone and South Korean Education Minister Moon Yong Lin after their meeting also said the program will offer annual training and class observations in Japan to 50 South Korean teachers.

The measure is designed to boost bilateral educational exchanges for mutual understanding, according to the statement.

Under the program, South Korean science and engineering majors will study at 25 national universities across Japan, including the prestigious University of Tokyo and Kyoto University.
