The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association announced Thursday that it will implement a scheme to reduce by 60 percent harmful emissions from diesel-powered vehicles in 2005, two years ahead of its original schedule of 2007.
Starting around 2003-2004, JAMA will start introducing new types of vehicles equipped with diesel particulate filters.
At the same time, the industry group will encourage users of diesel-powered cars to exchange them for new ones or vehicles powered by other fuels, or to equip them with particulate filters.
