In a tieup with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Mori Building Co. will open a contemporary art museum in Tokyo's Roppongi district in 2003, the company said.

It will be MOMA's first comprehensive tieup with an overseas museum.

The museum, to be named Mori Art Center, will be located on the top floor of a 54-story office building planned as part of an 11-hectare redevelopment project near Roppongi subway station.

The project will also include two residential buildings, a hotel, a theater, the new headquarters of TV Asahi and other commercial facilities.

"The key concept of our redevelopment project is the making of a cultural city. The museum is the symbol of that," Minoru Mori, president of Japan's leading developer, told a news conference Tuesday.

Under the agreement, MOMA will advise Mori Art Center on exhibition planning, staff training and art education programs. They will also jointly develop exhibitions and offer their collections for display.

MOMA Director Glenn D. Lowry, present at the same news conference, said the inaugural exhibition at the Mori Art Center will focus on the artworks of the second half of the 20th century, which will be drawn from MOMA's collections.

"Our relationship with Mori Art Center will enhance and expand our capabilities for exhibitions," he said.
