The National Police Agency said Tuesday it will join U.S. and European police to investigate Internet-based child pornography, in a move aimed at countering international criticism of the availability of Web-based child pornography in Japan.

Under a new law banning the sexual exploitation and abuse of minors, the NPA will exchange information with foreign police and take part in international investigations aimed at tracking down people who post pornographic images of children on the Internet, NPA officials said.

At a January meeting of experts from the Group of Eight major industrialized nations on international organized crime, participating countries pressed Japan to cooperate in tackling Internet child porn.
