Naoto Kan, former leader of the Democratic Party of Japan, will be appointed as the party's policy chief under new party leader Yukio Hatoyama, party sources said Wednesday.
Takahiro Yokomichi, the party's executive council chief who also ran against Hatoyama in the presidential race last week, will be appointed as vice president, the sources said.
Hatoyama offered the posts to Kan and Yokomichi on Wednesday, and the two accepted.
Tsutomu Hata, incumbent secretary general of the party, is expected to remain in his post, and Hiroshi Kumagai, former chief Cabinet secretary, will become deputy secretary general.
The nation's largest opposition party was seriously divided by the three-way election, and distribution of executive posts is considered as a key tool in piecing it back together.
The DPJ will hold a general meeting of Diet members on Friday, when the planned appointments of Hatoyama's new party administration are expected to be approved.
