OSAKA -- "Tako-yaki," the dumplings with octopus chunks that many people consider a traditional Kansai treat, are gaining popularity in other parts of the country, including the Kanto region, according to Osaka-based Zojirushi Corp.
According to a recent survey conducted by the leading thermos bottle maker, which also manufacturers tako-yaki griddles, the dish is popular because the family can share in its preparation at home.
To make tako-yaki, slices of cooked octopus are placed in a batter poured into round molds. The trick is to deftly turn the batter balls in their molds to make a perfectly round dumpling.
