The Tokyo-based Japan Foundation on Monday announced the 1999 winners of two prizes awarded annually for contributions to cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and other countries.
The Japan Foundation Award will be given to Frank Gibney of the United States, president of the Pacific Basin Institute at Pomona College, and to German conductor Wolfgang Sawallish, music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
The recipients of the Special Prize will be Ahmet Mete Tuncoku of Turkey, professor at Middle East Technical University; Tadashi Yamamoto of Japan, president of the Japan Center for International Exchange; and the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California.
The Japan Foundation Award winners will receive 5 million yen, while Special Prize winners will receive 2 million yen during an awards ceremony to be held Oct. 7 in Tokyo.
