Twenty students on Wednesday called on the government to take concrete steps to outlaw the recruitment of child soldiers.
The students made their request at a seminar held at Tokyo Women's Plaza in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward. The seminar was organized by the United Nations Children's Fund Office in Japan.
Reading aloud a statement written the same day addressed to the government, the press, educators and the Japanese community, the students demanded that the government press the international community to set the legal age for recruitment and participation in hostilities to 18 in all countries.
