Teenage R&B diva Hikaru Utada's debut album, "First Love," has sold 7.02 million copies, becoming the first record to reach the 7 million mark in the nation's popular music history, music magazine officials said Tuesday.
The album, released by the 16-year-old New York-born singer in March, achieved record-breaking sales by May, surpassing the former record for a single album of 5.11 million copies set by rock duo B'z.
The latest figure, released Tuesday, is certain to rise further, as Toshiba-EMI Ltd., to which the album's copyright belongs, has already shipped 8 million copies of the album, the officials said.
