East Japan Railway Co. will halt trains at stations for a few minutes shortly before midnight Dec. 31 to forestall possible Year 2000 problems, JR East sources said Tuesday.
The carrier plans to stop nearly all 250 runs scheduled to be in operation when 2000 kicks in, they said.
"Although we have completely upgraded all of our computer systems to get ready for the new millennium, there still is a possibility that power supply from the outside may get cut," a railway official said.
