The government established a crisis-management task force Friday within the Cabinet to cope with the Year 2000 computer problem and fully prepare itself for the worst, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Muneo Suzuki said Friday.
The team, tentatively called the General Conference on Measures Against the Year 2000 Problem, headed by Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Teijiro Furukawa, consists of eight members, including the heads of six Cabinet bureaus.
"While we beef up the crisis-management system concerning the Year 2000 problem, we must actively try to provide necessary information with the greatest care for the public," Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi told Cabinet ministers who gathered at Friday's government meeting on promoting an information-intensive society.
