Monolithic NTT Corp. reorganized Thursday in a step being watched by a rapidly transforming telecom industry eager to learn whether the move will foster competition or make the giant even stronger.
With the revised Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Law taking effect the same day, the carrier began operating as a holding company under President Junichiro Miyazu, two regional carriers -- NTT-East Corp. and NTT-West Corp. -- and a long-distance and international carrier -- NTT Communications Corp.
NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc., popularly known as NTT DoCoMo, which controls about 60 percent of the country's mobile phone market, NTT Data Corp. and other smaller firms also come under the holding company.
