Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara has launched a full-scale political push to get all U.S. military installations in the metropolis back in the hands of the citizens.
On Monday, he visited Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi and other key figures of the central government — all former comrades from Ishihara's days with the Liberal Democratic Party — to solicit their support for his controversial plan.
