The government will send 2,000 radios to East Timor to help U.N.-supervised polls on the area's independence to be held as early as August, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiromu Nonaka said Tuesday.
Following the historic accord signed between Indonesia and Portugal in May, East Timor is currently preparing for the polls to let the Timorese decide whether they want autonomy or independence.
At Tuesday's Cabinet meeting, the government decided to send radios to support activities of the U.N. mission, which will oversee voting and handle publicity on the polls.
Japan has already decided to provide $10 million to support the U.N. mission.
