The ruling Liberal Democratic Party will work to submit during the current Diet session a bill to trim the 500-member Lower House to 450 based on an earlier agreement with its coalition partner, the Liberal Party.
LDP Secretary General Yoshiro Mori said the party executives approved the plan Friday but details, such as the timing of the submission, have yet to be decided.
The LDP and the Liberal Party agreed in January during their talks to form a coalition to reduce the number of proportional representation seats in the Lower House to 150 from the current 200.
The current electoral system is a combination of single-seat constituencies and proportional representation.
