A woman who fell off a platform Tuesday morning in front of an approaching train at JR Shinanomachi Station in Tokyo narrowly escaped death by lying flat between the rails as the train roared over her, police said.

The unidentified woman got away with only minor injuries because she was small enough to survive in the 30-cm clearance space between the ground and the train's undercarriage, they said.

The Chuo Line train, bound for Nakano Station, stopped at around 10:25 a.m. after proceeding another 60 meters, police said.

Meanwhile, a less-fortunate woman the same morning suffered serious injuries when she was hit by an Ito Station-bound train on a grade crossing on the JR Tokaido Line in Shizuoka Prefecture, police said.

According to East Japan Railway Co. officials, the woman, whose name was withheld, walked onto the crossing and collapsed as the train approached.

Some 27,000 passengers were delayed by the two accidents, which led to the suspension of 12 runs and delayed another 12 for up to 45 minutes, the officials said.
