In the wake of the nation's first organ transplants from a legally declared brain-dead donor about 10 days ago and subsequent increase in demand for donor cards, a veteran emergency surgeon is calling on the public to carefully consider the consequences before signing their organs away.
"The historic organ transplants seemed to have impressed many people. But donating organs for others is not a simple act of love. People should discuss matters related to organ donation with their families," said Yuichi Hamabe, director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Bokuto Hospital's Life Support Emergency Center in Sumida Ward.
