Should an international rescue package be prepared to help financially troubled Brazil, Japan is ready to contribute its fair share, Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazawa said Thursday.
In a regular news conference, Miyazawa said it is not yet certain whether the International Monetary Fund, which put together a $41.5 billion package for Brazil in November, will increase the amount.
He said preventing a "contagion" of financial crises is urgently needed in dealing with Brazil's currency devaluation Wednesday, citing concerns about effects on emerging market economies.
But he downplayed the negative impact on Japan and the United States, saying market participants there had been well alerted about the economic situation of the South American country.
The Brazil crisis is certain to be discussed at the Asia-Europe finance ministers' meeting in Frankfurt, Germany, this weekend, he said.
