Ito-Yokado, one of the nation's leading supermarket chains, said Monday it will again offer a 5 percent discount on sales, this time for five days starting Wednesday at outlets nationwide except for Hokkaido.

The firm decided to launch the nationwide sales campaign following the big success of the four-day "fight recession" campaign last week in Hokkaido that was aimed at returning the 5 percent consumption tax to consumers in the recession-hit region.

During the four-day campaign, the firm's sales in Hokkaido increased 50 percent to 70 percent over the same period a year ago, according to company officials. The upcoming 5 percent discount offer applies to everything except cigarettes and some other items sold at 7,257 outlets, including Seven-Eleven convenience stores, the officials said.
