The Cabinet on Friday decided formally to invite South Korean President Kim Dae Jung as a state guest from Oct. 7 to Oct. 10.
Kim will have an audience with the Emperor and Empress, and hold a meeting with Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi to discuss bilateral and international issues as well issues concerning the Korean Peninsula, the officials said.
Kim is expected to be accompanied by ministers including Foreign Minister Hong Soon Young and Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Kim Sun Kil.
The two leaders are to exchange views on their policies toward North Korea and the communist nation's launch of a missile over Japan last week. The two countries are currently making efforts to conclude the stalled negotiations on a new bilateral fisheries pact before Kim's visit.
