Nihon Haika Corp. gave four former executives a total of about 42 million yen in retirement pay last summer, despite the company's nonretrievable debt of 2.7 billion yen, it was learned Thursday.
The four had formerly held positions in the Transport Ministry and related public corporations before going to work for the Tokyo-based company, which manufactures and distributes prepaid highway toll cards.
Under criticism from the Diet, the former company president, Kazuo Okubo, who received 24 million yen in retirement pay, and the former senior managing director, Toshihisa Kato, who received 7.5 million yen, resigned from their current positions at related public works companies later Thursday.
