The Japan Committee for UNICEF began emergency fundraising activities Monday to support relief measures in southern Sudan.
Proceeds will support UNICEF efforts to supply children with high-protein milk, safe drinking water and medical aid. UNICEF, in conjunction with Operation Lifeline Sudan, aims to expand its relief capacity to reach more than 38,000 children.
According to the UNICEF Sudan office, one in two children under age 5 suffers from malnutrition in the province of Bahr El Ghazal. In the province's capital of Wau, 80 percent of the children suffer from malnutrition and 20 percent are in critical condition. To help, call (03) 3355-3222.
