Thunder accompanied by heavy showers brought near record-setting rainfall Thursday to much of the Tohoku and Kanto-Koshin regions (Yamanashi and Nagano Prefectures), resulting in train delays and warnings from the Meteorological Agency.
Cold temperatures combined with a low pressure system in the afternoon destabilized the atmosphere and unleashed strong thunder showers, which visit the Kanto region only every few years.
Yokohama received 88 mm of rainfall in a one-hour period in the early evening, breaking the previous record of 82 mm, the agency said.
