The Lower House approved former Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa's resignation from the Diet during a plenary session Thursday.

Hosokawa, a member of the Democratic Party of Japan, abruptly announced April 30 he would quit and submitted his resignation to Lower House Speaker Soichiro Ito. Hosokawa said he had fulfilled his responsibilities following the launch of a political party in late April that aims to seize power from the Liberal Democratic Party.
