Railway experts from some 20 countries April 6 discussed the feasibility of transcontinental railway corridors for the smooth and fast transport of cargo through Asia and Europe.

The World Executive Council of the International Union of Railways talked about future cooperation to simplify paperwork such as customs clearance and consignment letters to shorten transport time.

Further consideration of three trans-continental routes -- those connecting the Russian Far East and Europe, China and Moscow through Kazakhstan and Singapore and Europe through India -- was proposed at the meeting.

Philippe Roumeguere, director general of International Union of Railways, stressed in a news conference that the organization has set up such corridors in Europe and will work to expand cooperation into other regions.

WEC is a body in the International Union of Railways that was established in 1922 to foster international cooperation in the rail industry. A three-day meeting on signaling and telecommunications in railway systems begins today.
