In a move to integrate its groupwide operations here, AT&T Japan announced April 6 the appointment of Darryl E. Green as its new president.

Green will retain his post as president and chief executive officer of AT&T Jens, a joint venture established in 1984 with 25 major Japanese companies that launched the first commercial Internet phone services in Japan.

Speaking at a news conference, Green said Internet phone business has expanded dramatically during the past few years and has become mainstream. For the time being, he said, AT&T Japan, which is a liaison for AT&T of the United States, and AT&T Jens will remain separate entities, but they will be integrated in terms of business strategy here.

He did not rule out the possibility of the merger of the two in the future. The ongoing economic slump in Japan may turn out to be a business chance for cost-efficient Internet phone services, he said.
